Samsung Galaxy S2 vs Samsung Galaxy S3

It’s already few days since the most anticipated Android smartphone ever, the Galaxy S3 is released so we wanted to compare it with its famous predecessor, the Galaxy S2.

Galaxy S2 vs Galaxy S3

There is no doubt that the Galaxy S2 last year revolutionized Android and smartphone market in general. It had the best display, processor, and camera at that time and it bring smartphones in the whole new level. The Galaxy S2 also gave 2nd life for Android platform in general by introducing radically improved TouchWiz interface. Comparing the Galaxy S3 with Galaxy S2 is not fair as the S3 is completely new smartphone with improved specs but I still want to point out the main things Samsung has done over this past year to impress gadget and performance geeks. Read on for the complete head to head battle

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy S2: Software and features

Galaxy S3 vs S2

Both the Galaxy S2 and the galaxy S3 is based on Android platform and both runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with TouchWiz UI v4.0. The Galaxy S2 came with Android OS, v2.3.4 (Gingerbread) preinstalled but you can upgrade it to latest and greatest Android flavor.

While the both phones run the exact same version of Android and TouchWiz there are still some differences in interface but not anything radical changed though. I have already got used to TouchWiz UI and it feels a bit boring to me but if you are first time Android user you will most likely find it very attractive.

New additions to the Galaxy S3 are:

  • S Voice – Voice assistant similar to Siri which you can find on iPhone 4S. The S Voice can do everything that Siri can plus it allows you to fully control your smartphone with voice commands.
  • S Beam – Allows transferring files with help of NFC and Wifi Direct. It means that you can transfer files between two NFC powered devices just by putting them together and conforming file transfer with a single tap.
  • Smart Stay – turns off the phone when you’re not looking at it and keeps it on while you are looking. This is great for reading, watching videos and other daily tasks.
  • Direct Call – lets you call a contact simply by bringing the phone to your ear. It saves you all of one or two screen taps.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy S2: Processor and performance

The Galaxy S3 features a quad-core Exynos 4212 processor clocked at 1.4GHz per core. This chip is based on the ARM Cortex A9 processor architecture, but tweaked and manufactured by Samsung internally. Preliminary benchmarks shows that the Exynos 4212 is the fastest smartphone processor in the world, leaving its main competitors, the dual-core Snapdragon S4 and the quad-core Tegra 3 far behind. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S2 uses a dual-core 1.2 Ghz in house built Exynos processor.

Below you can see performance comparison between the Galaxy S3 and S2. We can see a clear winner here!

While the Galaxy S3 has PenTile technology display instead of proper RGB display as for the Galaxy S2 it still looks better than its predecessor. It has better viewing angles and improved color saturation and outstanding pixel density.

Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy S2: Storage and memory

The Samsung Galaxy S2 has either 16GB or 32GB storage option, while the Galaxy S3 also has 64GB option (coming soon). Both has microSD card slot to add up to 32GB extra storage. Both features 1GB of RAM but the Galaxy S3 in US and Canada will get 2GB of RAM.

Galaxy S2 vs Galaxy S3: Camera

Both smartphones features 8megapxiel back facing camera with utofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus functionality, face/smile detection, image stabilization and 1080p video capture. While the cameras have the same features, the Galaxy S3 capture better quality images, it is achieved by introducing new image sensor and software.

Front facing camera has experienced downgrade from 2 to 1.2 megapixels but the image quality feels better and colors looks more natural.

Galaxy S2 vs Galaxy S3: Battery

The Galaxy S2 is comparison has 1650 mAh vs 2100 mAh battery as for the Galaxy S3. The Galaxy S3 has larger display, quad-core processor but it still manages to show impressive battery life outperforming its predecessor and its main rivals, the iPhone 4S and HTC One X.

It still discussable how long the Galaxy S3 battery will last due to different usage patterns but it is guaranteed that it will last longer than the Galaxy S2.

Based on benchmarks the Galaxy S3 battery offers:

  • Over 10 hours talk time (8:34h for Galaxy S2)
  • Over 5 hours of web browsing (4:24h for Galaxy S2)
  • Over 10 hours of video playback (8h for Galaxy S2)

Like I said it is hard to put the Galaxy S2 vs Galaxy S3 as last one is completely overhauled and it’s hard to find similarities between them.

The Galaxy S3 is the best and most powerful Android smartphone to date. It is true successor to the Galaxy S2 and has faced upgrade in any aspect. While many feel disappointed about its design I still find it very attractive and very easy to hold and use.

If you currently own the Galaxy S2 then upgrade might not be worth the money but if you are power user who wants to have the latest and greatest or you currently own the Galaxy S3, the Galaxy S3 is a must have upgrade.

    • Yes , the One X is a fantastic device, but it definitely shares the top spot with the S3. It’s all up to preference. Do check out our One V review to get a sense of “Sense”.

      • I had two HTC one x before the s3 and after my previous s2s and I found the HTC to be really buggy and slow. I’m pretty happy so far with the s3. .my only problem is the fact none of the home replacement programs work well with the device. Not a big issue though.

      • Hey, i would definitely recommend you to get the S3. it’s packed with more features. Once again, it depends on your budget. Good luck in choosing ur next smartphone! =D

      • Hello, if you’re not on tight budget, go for S3. It’s got great specs and will be upgraded to Jelly Bean. The S2 is cheaper but still powerful dual core with today’s market, but may not be upgraded. We recommend the Galaxy Note if you want long term
